Nestled in Vancouver's prestigious Shaughnessy district, this new home exemplifies the impressive balance of classic charm and modern elegance. While heritage by-laws required the exterior to retain its traditional style to fit seamlessly with the historic neighbourhood, our clients expressed their hopes of curating an interior inspired by freshness and modernity. Enthusiastic about this challenge, our team wasted no time in devising a strategy that would preserve the architectural bones of the home while infusing it with a hip, modern feel.
To guide our design, we drew inspiration from various historical elements and added modern twists to explore the balance of old and new. The mouldings, doors, and cabinetry highlighted strong, clean lines, while sleek ceiling details echoed the classic chevron pattern of the charcoal-stained floors.
We employed a monochromatic palette with white walls to create a blank canvas for an exciting art collection.
Handpicked ageless materials were used in edgy and unexpected ways, best exhibited in the antique bevelled mirror surrounding the fireplace. The classical marble slab flooring in the front foyer is fashionably slashed with a brass inlay that ties in with various additional brass accents throughout the home. A neutral palette of silk wallpaper, wool drapery, and lacquered furniture created a calming backdrop ideal for leveraging powerful focal points through the thoughtful placement of the art, lighting and other decorative objects. By paring back and keeping it simple, the outcome is a stunning home with a classic yet contemporary New York vibe.
It is a place where you will want to entertain, where memories will be made, and where you will love coming home to every day. This house is the perfect example of a sophisticatedly detailed and inviting space, striking a graceful composition of vintage and contemporary design.
